Overwatch and YouTuber Sophie Lloyd come together: A metallic take on symphonic Overwatch score

Overwatch

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It is described as a ‘hero shooter’, Overwatch assigns players into two teams of six, with each player selecting from a roster of over 30 characters, known as ‘heroes’, each with a unique style of play that is divided into three general roles that fit their purpose.

The game has become a massive hit, and like with any big game, leave it to a metal shredder to offer their own interpretation of the music. That’s where YouTube shredder Sophie Lloyd comes in. She’s been doing covers since 2012, amassing quite a following and teamed up with developers Blizzard Entertainment to create a heavy take on the symphonic Overwatch score. The release coincides with the game’s release of its soundtrack.

The guitarist has amassed more than 400,000 subscribers since first appearing online in 2012, thanks to her virtuoso covers of everyone from Nirvana to Hozier. And now, in her next attempt to prove anything can sound great with heavy metal, she’s teamed up with game developers Blizzard Entertainment to serve up a riff-heavy take on Overwatch’s symphonic score. Overwatch’s main overture gets the hard-rocking treatment, segueing into the booming The World Could Always Use More Heroes and then the suitably triumphant Victory theme.

Sophie’s self-professed “shredley” coincides with the release of the official Overwatch soundtrack and is a part of Blizzard’s ‘Summer Of Music’ campaign! A sequel, Overwatch 2, was announced in 2019 and will include new player versus environment (PvE) co-operative multiplayer modes. In addition, it will have a shared competitive multiplayer environment, allowing players of both games to play against each other. While it will be sold as a separate game, all-new heroes, maps, and competitive game modes will also exist in Overwatch. A theme based background score always mattered in making and creating a mood in game; the developers of Overwatch have made it up to the point!
